Ice Boxes

"Ice boxes", says Julie, "Are wooden boxes lined with tin or zinc and insulated with various materials icluding cork, sawdust and seaweed used to hold blocks of ice and refrigerate food. A drip pan at the bottom collected the melt water and was emptied everyday.

Cooling Cabinets

Cooling cabinets are cabinets that were placed in front of house walls during the cold. They stored food in them and drilled holes in the front to let the cool air in.

Ice Houses

According to Kendall Olsen, Ice houses are underground houses, that store ice which was harversted in the cold climated or in winter months. Chunks of ice were packed in salt and covered in flannel to be used for warmer climates.

Many people couldn't buy ice boxes, and they didn't have any ice houses or even cooliing cabinets. They got very desperate and just put them in baskets and placed them in cold streams. Others placed them in either caves or natural springs .
